PedalED's design ethos stipulates that the Japan-based manufacturer doesn't pursue innovation for innovation's sake. This suggests that company founder Hideto Suzuki not only acknowledges the validity of traditional solutions to cycling problems, but he also insists on only updating them with contemporary alterations when there is a clear functional benefit. Of all the items in PedalED's line, the Kaido Jersey may be the purest expression of this design philosophy. Named for the centuries-old network of Edo period roads that connected Japan, the Kaido Jersey begins with cycling's classic material, merino wool, and updates it with the stretch management and moisture control of Lycra and Meraklon. The Kaido roads were often the template for Japan's modern highway infrastructure, and the Kaido Jersey follows suit by building on Merino's natural and time-tested thermo-regulation and moisture management with just enough synthetic material to keep you even drier and maintain the jersey's athletic fit. PedalED didn't reinvent the jersey; it just improved the traditional design to match contemporary standards. The Kaido also stands out from the peloton with its classically-minded aesthetics by omitting the swooping shapes, fluo blasts, and unnecessary embellishment that so often define cycling kit. Instead, the only flair interrupting the heathered material is a classic, dark stripe down the center back. An elastic hem with silicone grip keeps the stripe neatly aligned. The Kaido is finished with two long-standing jersey companions, the full-length zipper and three rear pockets, which are updated with a chin protector and fourth, zippered pocket, respectively.
